Well Im about to fill a 48" run in my 150gl refugium, and Im not exactly sure how deep to make the Kitty litter and top it with sand, Live rock and Mangrove patch.... Should the Kitty litter be rinsed? does it need curing? (even though nothing should be dead on it!) Anyway , all the info you can offer is much appreciated.. Thank you. Curt Tried Michigan Reefers and no one new about the Kitty Litter method..

Fill it up but don't run water through it for a couple of days and the dust on the litter will become part of the mud.

kitty litter is clay. Mud collected for refugiums is clay. Kitty litter is just cheaper.

Kitty litter is the exact same thing as the mineral muds ;)

I didnt rinse mine or anything. I did about 3" of kitty litter with about 1-2" of sand on top. Just make sure you are using 100% clay, non fragranced litter.

Wow. I definitely missed this. I had no idea that one could use kitty litter for fuge mud. I hope I can find some of the all natural stuff locally. Then, my refugium builds would have a quicker start;)
Does anyone on this board use it?
