Sorry for your loss. A few words I might contribute here is even though you couldn't "see" ich doesn't mean it didn't have it. The rubbing indicates an irritation to me and swimming in the stream probably felt good to him.. If it was in fact ich, IME, stress is sure to kill.. I dont think so much about the temp swing, or even the sg increase causing stress or adverse effects. But the rock work change to a newly added fish may have done him in. I don't have all the info so this is just my opinion of how I'd look at this situation. Good luck in the future bs again, sorry for your loss..

yeah... not even a dramatic change really. it was only in one corner of the tank and oddly he seemed to get way more territorial after this and he had been with these same fish for a while. I think you are right. thanks for your post.
