ok i went to my lfs and found a bag of 6 lbs of basse rock for 12.99. it sounded too good to pass up. on the lable it reads

Enviromentally responsible, Collected on land form ancient reef deposits. (yea, sure)

    Helps maintain a proper pH

Encourages the growth of water purifying bacteria

Perfect substrate for coral and coralline algae growth

Clean and pure, not chemical or bleach treated.

it was cheap and seemed to be porous, so i tried it. it is VERY pale. i mean white as white can be. hopefully that is what it should look like thou.

It should be fine. And it most likely does come from an old (now) inland reef. nearly all base rock does ;) Heck for that matter nearly all live rock does as well.

I used a bunch of that to stack my rocks on top of. No ill effect to speak of so far and it does color up nicely in short order.

Ya its not bad pricing and great for filling in little spaces. I just wish it came in bigger chunks.

yea me too but with a 30 gallon its kinda perfect size for me. i already have big chunks of live rock in my tank so i just need smaller pieaces like you said to fill in the gaps.
