ok, I assume since this is a new tank I have some cyano, but I've actually never seen it up close and personal. Is that what this is? If so, what's the best way to do away with it? Sorry for the poor quality!

Yes.The age of the tank really makes no difference. Excess nutrients are the cause.

It is. My suggestion is to increase flow, decrease feedings, increase water changes to smaller more frequent changes.

I am going out of town this weekend, you say excess nutrients and civiccars says decrease food and increase flow and h2 0 changes. I've done several small water changes and will be gone for two days this weekend. I can turn up the flow, not feed and keep the lights off during that time. Think that will work?

I recently for the first time ever, have been dealing with cyano.

I made a few changes that really have helped.

    1. Lowered light schedule to 8hrs
    2. Feed less. I feed 1x a day but only a tiny amount, its gone in 40 seconds
    3. I have been doing 2 small water changes a week
    4. Cleaned out my filter completely
    5. Vacuum up the cyano during water changes
    6. Removed 1 fish (lowered my bioload)
    7. Change filter floss 2x a week
    8. Cut any light source from windows
    9. Changed my flow
    10. Added chaeto

I have seen a huge improvement in a week so far.

It will take some work and time but making a few changes will help

Lights out may make it go away for a little while but as soon as you turn the lights back on it will reappear. Have to fix the nutrient issue. There is no quick fix unfortunately.
