Is my RO membrane working properly...and how do I know when to change it?

Did what Shane said to try and if there is a crack I don't see it.

    hardzip-
please call Tuesday around 10:30am, and ask for Charles Mitsis. Please mention that you are the 3reef membrane question, hardzip. He is our founder and best suited to help you. he is tied up in the lab at the moment.
    thank you for your patience!

    Still no luck

Well I talked with charles for about a hr. he decided to send me out a new membrane canister. He said my water comming in was good except for the PH being high(tap water is around 10) (R/O ph is 6.7 - 7.0) anyways I received the new part and to no avail getting the same results 92% rejection rate.

So to sum it up new membrane, new membrane housing , recut a flow restrictor to get 3.65 :1 ratio, new sediment and carbon filters, new di's.
psi 68. temp 70-72, and yet nothing has changed. also swithched tds meters.

Could it be possible there is something wrong with the sensor that reads for the tds meter or something else wong with the r/o unit?

Also if I'm going to have to live with 92% how will I ever know when my membrane is shot because its always below the 95%?

    Thanks Steve

when we sent you a replacement membrane, we first verified its performance here in our lab as we wanted to be able to positively state our performance was double verified before sending you a replacement. We then also sent you a free housing in the event it was faulty (it doesn't appear to be).
At this point, I can only suggest that if you sent us your system we may be able to determine what (if anything) is at fault. It may be your water, or something not detected in our verbal interchanges.
A couple of other thought- Are your TDS meter batteries new? Do you have access to another meter to cross reference your readings?
As to your membrane replacement detection, with your low challenge, you could use your current set up and allow for a 2-3 % loss in rejection performance and arbitrarily use that as a replacement point for your membrane. As we tested your membrane here, that would equate to 96-97% on our feed water. Still, a very good number.
It can be very difficult to troubleshoot some problems remotely, and this case appears to be one of the ones that is stumping us.

Ok Thank you Bruce for replying I will change the batteries and see if I can get my hands on another TDS meter, If I decide to send my unit in to be checked can you please tell me what I need to do to send it to spectrapure.

    Thank You ......Steve

Spectrapure, wanted to seek some advice as I have from other members on the board regarding this issue.

I just bought Maxpure MPDI 180 gallon unit. My house pressure is 40 PSI and I am worried about running through membranes and DI filter extremely fast. Is this gonna be a problem running the system at 40 PSI?

I don't have a TDS meter yet. I am running the system at 4:1 and it takes me about 40 minutes to make 4 gallons which is perfect for me as I only need about 8 gallons a week. Water production is good enough my only concern is burning up the membranes and DI too fast.

What do you think, should I get a booster pump or is it not needed?

40 psi may decrease the rejection by a couple of percent. There's no way to know if you would benefit from a booster pump (or if it would be economically feasible) without some TDS measurements of the tap water and the RO water.
