Perfectly safe. It is used in high pressure applications.

Why do you want to use this instead of SCH 40/80 pipe?

Yes black PVC is reef safe. You can find lots of black PVC pipe and fittings at www.customaquatic.com . Its not HDPE.

Well that makes much more sense. I live in the backwoods. We don't have that stuff anywhere.

I would say yes it is reef safe because I used some of it in my reef tank to make diy overflows. I have not had any negetive affects from using it in the nearly 2 years my tank has been running.

    Depends on what kind.
Some are just colored black. Some are the high pressure. Those are safe.
But some are used for non-potable applications such as sewer and irrigation. These are non-potable pieces that will leach extra chemicals in to the water and should be avoided.
What the heck you doing to the biocube now Jake? ;)

It's funny, one of the LFS here in town really advocates Sch 80 PVC for their high end installations. The other LFS advocates class 200 PVC. Class 200 PVC is cheaper, lighter, and runs more flow through the same (o.d.) diameter pipe. It seems like a no brainer to me. Class 200 is not rated to handle as much pressure as sch 40 or sch 80 but our systems aren't high pressure systems. Even pumps that are flowing thousands of gallons per hour aren't putting much pressure on the pipe because the onther end of the pipe is open.

I still think it's easier to paint it black after it's assembled. The Krylon plastic paint is reef safe and dries super fast.
