I had been reading and studying plans on DIY tank stands. I finally bought the 2x4s two weeks ago, and built the frame. Today I bought the plywood and cut the pieces for the stand. I attached all the pieces except the top and front. I need to figure out how to make the front for the doors, and I still need to buy trim. Then I will stain and seal the wood.

I thought this would be cheaper than buying a stand, but it turns out to cost more than I thought. oh well it is all about the experience right?

Good job! But where are the pictures? Are you going to build a matching canopy?

It may have cost just as much but it's made better right?

Pictures will be coming soon. I was going to wait until I started staining it before taking any. Who wants to see my shotty woodwork? lol
I was thinking about building a canopy but I am not sure how to do it to match. I built the stand for my 55g but big enough for a future upgrade to a 75g or 90g. I am not sure how to build a canopy the same way. I may have to do some more research.

Okay you asked for pics, here they are... I am hoping this thing holds my 55g. I will have about 8" of clearance for a sump with if a 29g tank. do you guys think that is enough?

You're kidding, right? That thing could hold an army tank! :D Excellent job. :thumbs_up1:

I believe 8" should be enough clearance.

I actually am concerned about that middle cross beam, that will be the support for the front of my 55g tank. I don't have any leg supports underneath it, but then again I may just be over thinking things..

You're definitely worrying for nothing; with the 2 x 4 top frame on edge in such a short span, you won't have any problems.

FWIW, the commercial stand I used for a 4' 55g only had a 1 x 3 frame and 3/8" laminated particle board skin, and it never collapsed. :)
