So the other day I was cleaning my canister filter and changing the carbon. I used this product (kent marine reef carbon) for the first time. I used the same volume as I normally do for regular carbon. I guess this stuff is very potent. When I awoke in the morning ALL of my acros were completely bleached white. The rest f the corals and inverts didn't look so good but they all survived. I didn't realize carbon could be so dangerous but I can't think of anything else that would have caused the die off.:cry::cry::cry:

Carbon is powerful, but that sounds extreme. When did you get the carbon, was it dusty, like it had been sitting on the shelf for a long time? A while back I believe there was a recall on kent carbon due to copper consmination. That would seem like a more likely explanation. Too much carbon could potentially bleach acros I guess, but wouldn't explain poor health of other inverts.

I did rinse the carbon good but it could have been shelved along time. I read that too much carbon can cause the Alk level to crash. Perhaps that is what happened. Anyone ever heard of that?

Yep, due to toxic levels of heavy metals. Instant cause to bleaching acros.
