So now that I have my light mounted I have been staring at my tank and noticed a couple colonies of hydroids on my glass. :cheesy:

I've been reading old posts here on hydroids (there are a lot of posts here on this!) and it seems that the ones on glass are harmless and it is the brown ones that are nasty.

Do you agree? What have you heard or what is your experience with the ones on glass?

    Hi Matt

my experience is that they turned up early on, maybe 2 or 3 weeks after all the basics where in tank (SW, Rock, sand etc) and then by about week 12 I never saw any again
I did have a good few of them in the early days, could not count them to be honest.

Ahh I was curious if it may be new tank related.

Any that I've had have not caused any ill effects in the tank. I DID have one cool sighting of a mini jellyfish pulsing through the tank but since we moved I haven't seen it again. He was so tiny.

My 2 systems that I've setup both have had them in the early stages but they disappeared eventually in my last system. No issues with them that I've noticed.

Digitate hydroids are the ones to look out for.

They definitely seem new tank related. Our tank was covered in them after a month or so after cycling, and then after another month they were all gone never to be seen again. Same with our smaller nano tank. From what I've seen, they are absolutely harmless. You can magfloat them off the glass, but they'll be back eventually.

I had them at first and then they disappeared.
