I was thinking of turning them off at night to create more calm water, but I am worried that when the timer comes back on there could be a clownfish or snail etc inside the guard and get chopped up.. anyone have this happen?

Why turn them off? The ocean currents don't turn off at night.

I Wouldn't turn them off. My coral have greatest polyp extension at night as they shift into a feeding/respiration mode. The flow will help reduce CO2 build up from said mode too.

Plus, Koralias have a tendency to reverse flow when cut off.
