I think 80-100 lbs of fine aragonite sand should be good.

I like what looks best. I don't like seeing sand above the glass line because it gets all gross and ugly. I prefer a small sand bed too. Bacteria down there scares me and i don't want problems in the future.

i have a 75 gallon with about 80 pounds of sand in it that gives you about a 3 inch base you can add a little more if you want a 4 inch base just remember if your getting sand diggers put your rock on the bottom before adding the sand

go bare bottom, much easier and you don't have to deal with trapping all that crap in the sand bed.

Millions of small MicroCrustaceans live in/on your sandbed. These can range be
calanoids, harpactacoids, Amphipods, Microfauna and also benificial bacteria
just to name a few. In a closed ecosystem, diversity provides stability, and live sand
provides/allows that diversity for millions of microorganisms to exist. For example the
Green Mandarin's main source of food in nature is the sand dwelling Herpactacoid
Copepods. Live sand provides the environment for many other benificial chemical reactions
that take place in a reef tank. The sand helps recycle waste material that is constantly produced in the tank.

Plus it really brightens up the tank and gives you that beach look.
