I have a 75 gallon fish tank and I've heard a couple different rule about the maximum number of fish that should be in the tank.

Is the general rule of thumb 1" of adult size fish per gallon correct?

This is a well debuted topic, but I like the 1" of fish per 2-3gals of water(SW)

How many fish you can have in a tank has much more to do then with just size.

"inches" per gallon is a very relative recommendation.

Just as important are age of tank, compatabilty, need for free swimming room, and how much effort you are willing to take responsibility for maintaining proper water conditions.

If you are willing to due frequent regular water changes you can handle more fish then if you aren't.

Add them slowly (over months) and keep your eye on water params, they will let you know you have reached limit.

Your fish will let you know if they are in a "happy" environment or not.

I've also heard 1 fish per 15-20g in a SW. I have a 75g, in it I have 2 clowns, 4 damsels(cause they are hard to catch), 1 large yellow tang and a lawnmower blennie.

Also consider the species you are planning to keep. A 10g system is an obvious mismatch for a 10" Oscar. :)

I had tons of fish in my old 20 tall. I had 60 gallons of filtration and did routine maintenance. I never had a problem.....
