I want to keep my lights on for as long as possible but not too long to help algae growth. 8 maybe 9 hours or more but I'm not sure what the average time is for everyone.

    Thanks.

I logged on specific to search for a thread on THIS topic. Couldn't have been better timed.

I have my actinics are for 15 hours and my 10K's are on for 9.

I am battling green hair algae and not getting the coraline growth that I want so I was wondering if I needed to do less light. What is enough for corals and not so much to induce algae?

BTW, tank is 2.5 months old, water params are good.

Your tank is still maturing...You are going to go through algae blooms. It is just something that happens...Not to everyone, but it happens. I to this day believe that algae is due to whatever was in the live rock you purchased. Changing your light schedule is a temporary fix IMO. Until the algae uses all of the fuel available, it will continue. Run a good Phosban reactor, Skimmer, and keep up with your water changes. Don't overfeed, and then just WAIT IT OUT> You cannot stop mother nature, just help her. It will pass. Mine took almost three months to get through Hair Algae. I haven't seen it since.;D

I have my dawn/dusk on for 12 hours and daylight for 10 hours. I am hoping to replicate the tropical light schedule since most if not all of our corals come from the tropics.

What are dawn/dusk lights and daylight lights? What is the difference?
