OK so one of my astrea snails landed on it's back and died. It was behind a piece of LR so I didn't see it in time to save it. I was wondering how to get the dead snail out of it's shell so I can put the empty shell back in the tank for one of my hermit crabs to move into. Anyone got any ideas? I don't want to just leave him in the tank and wait for a hermit crab to eat it out because I don't want anything dead in my tank to produce nitrates.

you can do like I did. I took a fork stuck it through the hard part and pulled. some stayed behind and my shrimp went in to get it cleaned then my crabs went inside. the shell is real clean now.

anytime one of my snails dies, the other members of the cuc make quick work of disposing of it.

If you do decide to take it out, beware of an awful smell. They stink like you wouldn't believe!! If you have many crabs in your tank, they will take care of him quick like everyone said..

If your worried about it spiking ie: a big snail, put it in an ant bed. I have done it many times and it works great.
