I know it depends on the coral but as a rule of thumb. I'm thinking about buying my first SPS frag soon and my salinity will swing between 1.025 to 1.026 every so often.

    Will this swing kill SPS?

    Thanks.

I dont think so, but anything bigger than that you might want to watch out! IMO

Mine swings .0007 every other day in the down direction when the ATO goes off, then slowly rises as water evaporates. So, you might be fine.

That is not a problem at all. 1.026 to 1.021 could be depending on how fast the change is. If it is slow enough they will adapt until their ability to uptake nutrients is affected. If it does get too far out just bring it back slowly.

I disagree. That is not a large swing and I doubt it happens quickly. I would not worry about it. The Salinity in the ocean does not stay constant all over so no need for dead on consistency in the aquarium. If it was a larger swing over a short period of time I would be worried. Buy a cheap frag and see what happens. Only way to be 100% sure.

EDIT: I read the person's post I quoted incorrectly.

I went from 1.025 to 1.019 in a very short period of time and it was very detrimental to my corals. I lost a few and it took the others a few weeks to be careful. Going from 1.025 to 1.026 is not that big of a deal though.

Honestly my SG probably waviers between 1.025 - 1.027 in a 48 hour period. No ATO, pour about 1/3 of a gallon of ro/di everyother day.

SPS grow near freshwater springs and in estuaries but I agree, a swing of anywhere from 1.030-1.018 shouldn't kill much, might cause some STN and RTN in sps but only if its over the course of a couple hours or less.
