I have a hermit crab I got from a saltwater creek in october and he is starting to get very big. Right now looking at his claws I would say about 3" is that too big and unsafe for the fish sleeping at night?

    Sounds too big.

You can not release the hermit back to the wild, that is why individuals should not take animals from the wild they are not very familiar with.

You risk introducing a pathogen into the wild population that the wild population has no immunity for because they have not been exposed to it, not good.

IMOPE, anything that is not receiving enough food from leftovers can become opportunistic. Unfortunately, many large hermits are predators by nature. Can you post a pic? Hopefully you don't have the dreaded giant hermit- those things get enormous and can be quite destructive in captivity.

He looks like your typical stripped leg hermit.
