I don't know if it's still the same. HD used to sell GE MH's that were @ 4000K. Not only would that be great for growing nuisance algaes but it would look like your fish were swimming in lemonade....way too yellow. (As previously stated, they might have higher Kelvin bulbs now but I would doubt it)

I know people with frag tanks that use 6700k screw in light bulbs in a $10 fixture from home depot, if the water isnt very deep you dont have to worry about penetration so much, the only thing is with just 6700k you get hardly any color, before he frags and sells he moves them to a tank under 20k bulbs for about a month so they start to color back up

I've often wondered this myself - i think someone told me that they arent designed to be used around water, let alone salt water and will quickly deteriorate. Im not sure tho - you would think you could just hang one far enough away from the tank to avoid spray and with the correct bulb would work just the same.

My thought too! The one I'm looking at is weatherproof. It's an outdoor spotlight so it has to be.

I can't believe it...there is a blue hippo in a six gallon tank and no one thinks anything of it? Is it alright because it's a juvenile hippo?

Not in my opinion. People get attached to their fish and stress them out by keeping them in a tank far too long after they've outgrown it.
