I have had this clam for about 15 months and all has been going so well. He was high on the live rock for many months and then started to jump so he has been placed in the sand for about 5 months. Yesterday I noticed my starfish was all over him and he looked unwell so i have lifted him back up high again but he jumped again overnight. I thought he was dead this morning but he reacted when i lifted him out of the water so i am leaving him in the tank. His mantle is really retracted and lost color and seems to be fleshy inside. Any ideas. Water quality is fantastic, lighting is good, no issues with anything else in tank!

IME when a clam is dying there isnt much that you can do.

I remember that someone told me that sometimes clams could be dying and look healthy till its too late.

But im not too familiar with clams, so hopefully someone will chime in. ( do you see any pests in it maybe?)

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
    Couple questions please.

Are you running any GFO or just started to run it?

Have you looked at images of pinched mantel disease?

Have you looked at night for predatory worms at the base?

Have you seen any Pyramid snails?

Lastly I can not tell from image because the clam is closed but is it a maxima or crocea?

Opp last one, have you changed the lighting at all?

I take it's the clam on the left in the first photo?
Yea, it doesnt look good. Your tank however, from what I can tell is really nice!
What are your lights? Could be the issue.

Looks to be a maxima...IME once they are that far gone there is nothing you can do.

I am afraid that it is not good. You can tell by the coralline on the shell that it has not grown for some time. You should always see a nice white growth ring under the mantle on your clams.

Can you tell me what a GFO is please?

I have some little white snails all over the shells of my clams. They are cone shapes and about the size of a grain of rice. They could be Pyramid snails! They are very white. I have had them in the tank for a long time and havent noticed them eating anything. Not sure if this photo is any better. You can see right through him:-/ but he is still reacting to movement.

    Yes Maxima

The only change i did with lighting is add another hour last week.

Just a thought-- Was it looking healthy before you saw the starfish on it, and what kind of star do you have?

just asking because some starfish actively prey on clams.

Thanks, you are correct. My other clams are growing well and have a nice white growth ring under the mantle. Maybe he has lacked the light being lower in the tank which is a RSM250. Here is a good shot of my tank.
