    I was thinking somewhere between $500 - $1000.

You could by 7 hi points!

for that price range, I would find a kimber custom carry. May have to be slightly used but it is one of the best handguns you can find.

Most kimbers that I found start out around $1500, but those are brand new.

Those are really priced cheap. What is the quality like on these? I am a firm believer in that you get what you pay for, so it makes me wonder about the quality of their product is all.

Nah, it's pretty safe to knock 10-25% of retail in magazines for guns. Well certain guns, lol. And I hate to knock high point, but if I'm using a gun for self defense, I'm not real comfortable with something that costs $120 verse the cheapie option that is about $300. I'd rather save and buy a gun I know will fire right. Like you said, this isn't really the place to skimp on cash. Fire a High point and then a springfield/SW/Kimber/glock/ruger, and you'll know where the extra $300-1000 is!

Dont buy a Glock because someone else says they really like their Glock. Dont buy a Ruger because someone else says they really like their Ruger. Personally I hate Glock. Why? Because the way I present my weapon, they point high for me. Built like a tank and take a beating, but I'll never buy one.

Most important things is that it fits your hand well, and you train with it as if it was part of your hand. Know how to manipulate it under stress and during malfunction. In a gun fight your gun IS your life, treat it that way.
