I'm having a pretty extreme algae outbreak in my tank. It's very hard green algea, very very short. rather like coraline. It's pretty much only on the glass. The snails seem to like it, there are their "eating signs" all over the glass. They are just not fast enough. I was about to get rid of it using a razor blade because that "magnet" doesn't clean it off. Is that kind of algae one of the typical kinds that bloom in the beginning of a tank?
