    ...312211 13112221 1113213211 31131211131221

Don't know the name of the sequence but you essentially write or "talk" out the order of the previous group of like numbers next to each other - with numbers.

So for the last order of numbers you provided (111221) it would be: "Three Ones's two two's one one" or 312211 - Rinse and repeat.

So I posted my previous response before a bbq and began thinking more about it while there. Specifically, exactly how large the numerical sequence might grow once you reach higher steps into the pattern. The most I've written by hand might have been 10 or so steps when I first learned about the pattern in college, so now that I'm back from the bbq and a few deep, as usual, my curiosity got the best of me.

I wrote a quick .NET console app whose purpose is to output each step of the pattern from 1 to n into a text file. Up to 20 steps into the pattern generates quickly. 30 and above and you see a significant performance hit in generating the resultant string. I went to 50 steps and it took up to 8 minutes to generate. Granted, the app wasn't written to be super efficient and I'm sure I could optimize it quite a bit. It's less than 100 lines of code currently and could easily be brought down to less than 40, I'm sure.

To give a quick example of the growth, here's the output of the following steps after that of my first response generated from my program:

    10 : 13211311123113112211

    11 : 11131221133112132113212221

    12 : 3113112221232112111312211312113211

    ........

    16 : 132113213221133112132113311211131221121321131211132221123113112221131112311332111213211322211312113211

    17 : 11131221131211132221232112111312212321123113112221121113122113111231133221121321132132211331121321231231121113122113322113111221131221

    18 : 31131122211311123113321112131221123113112211121312211213211321322112311311222113311213212322211211131221131211132221232112111312111213111213211231131122212322211331222113112211
    .....

    3113112221131112311332111213122112311311123112111331121113122112132113121113222112311311221112131221123113112221121113311211131122211211131221131211132221121321132132212321121113121112133221123113112221131112311332111213213211221113122113121113222112132113213221232112111312111213322112132113213221133112132123123112111311222112132113311213211221121332211231131122211311123113321112131221123113112221132231131122211211131221131112311332211213211321223112111311222112132113212221132221222112112322211211131221131211132221232112111312111213111213211231132132211211131221232112111312211213111213122112132113213221123113112221133112132123222112111312211312112213211231132132211211131221131211132221121311121312211213211312111322211213211321322113311213212322211231131122211311123113321112131221123113112211121312211213211321222113222112132113223113112221121113122113121113123112112322111213211322211312113211

    etc..etc...

Step 50 has almost 900,000 individual numerals in the string, clocking in at 894,810 exactly. It takes up over 250 Microsoft Word pages alone at 11 pt font.

I've attached the resultant text file of the pattern if anyone's interested to see how it grows from 1-50. Pretty interesting stuff.

edit: No I haven't as the file extremely exceeds the max limit for attachments on the forum.

Anyway, just some extra extra credit for you Crimson. Cool trivia question btw. It took a second for it to all come back to me. I also have the application for anyone who's interested in seeing how high they're willing to take the pattern. 50 steps was the most I was willing to wait.

Oh and I finally just learned the actual name of the pattern from wikipedia is called the "Pea Pattern". ;)

    Cheer's - Happy and safe 4'th of July everyone@!

Oh well, I was really hoping to entice our more experienced reefers into a discussion on the relationship of cal, ma, alk, ph, salinity and temp.

Anyone with a question idea for me for next week please send it to me.

The Pea Pattern is always fun – since this is always a fun forum I thought I’d tack that on...

I'm gunna justy make a guess. If it was on other things in the tank i'd suggest diatoms or algae.
If only on the heater i'd think due to the heater being better conditions that the surrounding system. So, with tthat scenario I'd guess it may not be algae. I don't know, but I want to know the answer now. :)

Without cheating. I learned this in MCSE class.
There is 3 ones 2 twos and 1 one. so the next number is 312211
next would be 13112221 followed by 1113213211 then 31131211131221 etc.

    WOW this post is old!

I seen that before, that's my guess also, baked on calcium, I scraped that stuff many times off my heater.

    What is karma?
Well Wrassman said it best -

"Karma is just a fun way of expressing yourself on the board. If you like someone's post, or if it has been helpful to you (or others) in some way, then you should give positive karma. (By clicking on the karma button on their post profile - )

On the other hand, if someone is rude and nasty to you or someone else, you can take away their karma (that won't happen here :) )"

It's as simple as that. Have fun with it !!

Giving karma is a member's only feature.

No flame wars over karma please! Remember it's just for fun.
