I would consider selling it off because Im not sure how much biological filtration it will provide. If its the canister filter they can be quite the nutrient traps and may require adding different filter media to make them work. I had a few fluval canister filters early on and they required constant cleaning. The type of saltwater inhabitants you are planning on keeping and the size of the tank will really influence what kind of filter you will want on the tank.

    couple things

What size is tank? Assume it is not drilled
What size is filter "regular maintenance is key when using canister filters but they can be used successfully"
What do you plan on stocking in tank

What other filtration did you have in mind?
