    Hello,
Here's my entry into this contest.

HowTo Make A Glass Aquarium in 3 Steps

I actually made three "3step" DIY movies (and have another 3 in the works), but I decided to enter this one because there's not many movies on "how to build a glass aquarium" out there. I found that strange since an aquarium is the primary piece of equipment needed for this hobby ::) I will post my other 3Step movies once I finish my amateur editing on them in the regular DIY forum

I hope you find this topic as exciting as I did. I also hope this movie at least helps fellow reefers create projects they want too, and be able to customize their aquarium hobby just as they dream it to be.....because it's doing that for me ;)

    Cheers,
    Rickets.

You'll hear about it further in this movie, but just to explain a little more here that's the sump that blew up on me and dumped 40 gal of SW onto my basement floor (carpet) while I was at work. Nothing like coming home from a crappy job to SW all over, and the tank in turmoil. I'm still trying to get over that trauma. Every day when I walk in the door the first thing I do is look down stairs at the carpet to see if it's wet :/

I'm in the process of water proofing my carpet edges so if that ever happens again the spillage will go directly to the floor drain.

No I didn't make that sump :p ....a "professional" tank maker did. But I used the left over glass from that sump to make the tank in this movie :)

great video, my 40 breeder sump cracked last week so this was timely! :)
I just got it cleaned out tonight and will be removing the trim tomorrow so I can replace the front panel of glass, this just showed me I'm not entirely crazy yet :p

Thanks guys. It was really simple, and opens up so many new possibilities. This was the first tank I ever built. First time cutting glass...well I did a few small test pieces before actually. It was super easy. The hardest part is making sure not to cut yourself with the glass, and to stop worrying when filling it up the first time

    Nice!

    Well done Bzar! :clapping:

A ton of great tips there. I hope this encourages others to try themselves.

I especially enjoyed "This is the very 1st time I've done this. If it works, great, if not, then I am showing you what NOT to do the 1st time."
    Classic.

Thanks for entering the 3reef 2010 DIY Contest.

Great entry. There have been several lately - this contest is getting interesting. :)

    Thanks Matt.

Really enjoyed this DIY, and out of all the DIY projects I've done this one was the most rewarding so far....I got some good ones coming, I think....really starting to get into some unique concepts soon. I'll keep the 3 step theme. I like it, and think it'll be good promo for this site which has helped me more than my post count can tell.

Speaking of post counts...I know mines low on this site compared to some and I feel I need to explain (I've also been privately asked why a few times too). It's because of two reasons. First I usually just browse/read. I guess I'm a "lurker" at heart, but I try to give back to the community through my video's. So when I saw this contest it was really exciting. Second, and probably the biggest reason, I don't get 3reef at work :( Everyday at lunch when I get time to browse the net I always check 3reef in hopes it'll work and maybe the IT guys did sometime different to allow it .... but every day I get a message ... "Sorry that site is not allowed. Please contact your supervisor if you want this website allowed for work related reasons." It's one of the few reef sites I can't get at work where I get most of my forum time. Tried everything but proxy's.....and I don't want to get fired for doing that :p That's why I make the movies....can't post much because I don't have much time to in life, so the few momments I get for my hobby I just record and post on YouTube :) Also best to leave the forums to the real exports....I'm certainly still in the learning phase....but I'll try to share where/how I can.

Thanks for the contest....it's pretty cool.

Actually that angle might just work this week. All the staff have been at a conference on work/life balance, vicarious trauma, self care, staff moral, burnout, etc....this week. If there was ever a time for me to ask to have 3reef allowed this would be the time. I'll let you know how it goes...this might not just be a coincidence.
Worst they can do is say no, and start monitoring all my internet activity :/ hmmm .... meh, why not. Worst Worst case scenario I lose my job, my wife leaves me, I find a better one, and then I try to start a reef related business....there's no bad! Only opportunity :p

Jeez I sound like a self help book tonight….conferences. *sheesh*

You are welcome and thanks for your entry again. I enjoyed it. As for your job and wife... well I don't think 3reef is worth all that! lol ;D

Nice video. I've always thought about making a rimless tank like yours, but was afraid if regular silicone could withstand the water pressure. I wasn't sure because many of the brand name rimless tanks use some kind of strong silicone adhesive developed in Germany or something like that, but in your video, regular silicone seems to work just fine. I wonder if there's really a difference between them?
