I am thinking about putting a 4 inch deep sand bed in my fuge under the tank. I'm not a big fan of DSB's because I think they look ugly, BUT if it's shoved under the tank no one will see it. I am just wondering if the dsb will actuall do anything. The dimensions will be 14.5 inches long by 12 inches wide with a 4 inch bed of sugar grade sand. Will this small of an area actually do anything for my 40 breeder or would I be just as well to use chaeto only rather than a DSB and chaeto?

ya the dsb will eventually form aerobic and anaerobic zones just like live rock and essentially become a form of "live rock" in the sense that it will denitrify bacteria. it will also harbor benificial worms and copepods which will enter the water column and feed the tank inhabitants.

DSB is very beneficial. It acts like a filter as well.
