A gray whale that washed ashore in West Seattle last week at an unusually high amount of human debris in its stomach, marine mammal researchers announced today.

The 37-foot-long whale had more than 50 gallons of undigested stomach contents, including more than 20 plastic bags, small towels, surgical gloves, sweat pants, duct tape, pieces of plastic and a golf ball, according to John Calambokidis of the Olympia-based Cascadia Research Collective.

there's a lot of people that deny the impact of garbage in the ocean, especially the large area off of the coast of California.

Hopefully this stuff keeps coming up in the news and helps people wake up. The damage is probably too much at this point for nature to take care of on any reasonable timescale and can probably only be reversed the same way it got there: human action.

this was actually in gearhart oregon(or it was another grey whale at similar time). we were down there this weekend and actually saw it. It was all wrapped up in rope most likely from irresponsible crabbers.

edit. these were actually 2 separate whales in the span of a week even worse :(
