Shrimp often get those "lumps" from parasitic isopods.

They are most common in peppermint shrimp but can be found in a few different species including crabs. I don't know Seanno it doesn't sound like something that I would try(removal). Maybe you want to think about what Mr. B said and take them back. Good luck either way.8)

Hmm...Dad doesn't want to make an unneeded trip to Findlay, but doesn't want the money we spent to go to waste, if this parasite is harmful. Did people say that the parasitic isopods will come and go, or can they lead to the death of my shrimp?

I'm all for playing operation (bad joke), but not unless it is life or death for the shrimp. Having to reach thru the gills with a set of tweezers kind of scares me.

Well from what I have read the damage is minimal (in most cases)however it does cause the shrimp to be more sensitive to fluctuations in salinity. Its a tough call.

One question, Sean... did you buy a pair hoping they would mate?

If I read that article correctly, the parasite interferes with the development and function of the female's reproductive organs, so essentially you have two "forced" males.

My last pair did produce eggs pretty often. But mating them was not my intention.

Well I found most of a molt of one of my shrimp. So that's good. But I am not sure which shrimp it was, as they both still have the bopryds on their side(s)...
