You definitely need to have something solid under the clam as it is a rock boring species as mentioned by PL. If you are going to leave it on the sand, you'll want to put a flat piece of rock or a sea shell under its foot.

I started out trying to keep my Maxima on my live rock. It also kept kicking itself off. I then put it on the sand with a flat rock below it. The darn thing would eventually shift off of that. So now my Maxima just sits in my sand. It seems to be doing well and growing nicely. When I clean my glass with my mag float it kicks up sand. When sand gets on my clam he just closes his valves a couple times and blows it out.

When he gets bigger I'll try moving him to a nook in my LR. But for now he'll have to stay on the sand.

And yes when a fish comes close by he closes momentarily. That's a defensive reflex. You should make sure your clam reacts to light before purchasing it.

Well, you can't force a clam to do anything it doesn't want to but I'd definitely be concerned about it having sand dumped on it all the time.
