Hello trijam. If memory serves me correctly, they are measured in PAR rather than watts. Having the correct PAR is more important than watts. I'll get you the PAR since it will vary upon bulb configuration. Yes it will grow coral, but what kind of coral will depend on bulb configuration and amount bulbs.

I believe they are PAR30 bulbs.

Par30 should refer to the parabolic reflector in the light, not the PAR(photosynthetically active radiation).

I assumed that when companies said the bulbs were PAR30 or PAR38 they meant photosynthetically active radiation output. Especially since they higher the PAR number the more bulbs that were in the light. A PAR30 has 5 and a PAR38 has 7.

The PAR30 and PAR38 are just measurements. Just like your florescent bulbs. T-5, T-8, T-12. All it is is millimeters.

The PAR30 is 30mm wide, the PAR38 is 38mm wide. The PAR comes from Parabolic Reflector. Doesn't really work for LEDs, but it has stuck.

As for these little guys, I want to say that they are 2 Watt LEDs. 5x2W= 10Watt Unit. Your Par output will vary on your height above tank and water depth.

That makes sense with the 30 and 38. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Wow those are very bright. Almost too bright. How deep is that tank in the picture?

    Nice Pics and write-up computerJohn.

I have two bulbs in the configuration you do and two in 4blue 1 white.I had them in my test lamp for only a few minutes at a time so I didn't notice the heat soak. I'll take your findings into consideration when building my mount for them.

What do you mean by building a mount?
