I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on taking a container with holes in it pass water and filling it with chaeto and just hanging it inside the tank.

In your experience does this help in terms of minor algae problems?

Great DIY project in my opinion.

I'm using one now,it's a specimen container like the ones used at a LFS for catching fish, with a bunch of 1/4 inch holes drilled into it.Seems to work to a degree, you have to play around a little to get some flow through it.You will also have algae grow in it and it does detract from the appearance of your tank.

Never heard anyone say that before. Count yourself lucky, as most complain of just the opposite problem.

Alright thanks guys, I just having it sitting in my main tank until I build a box for it. Bought some of that egg crate stuff you find in the lighting section of Home Depot, was planning on making tops out of it as well.

I ended up getting a little netted breeder box thing and putting my Chaeto inside, hopefully it helps.

    container idea

I have two tanks; a 29 Biocube reef and a 125 FOWLR and I use one of those suchion cup containers that are designed for a sink in each of them. You can get them in the hardware/plumbing section of Walmart or Home Depot/Lowes. I grow caulerpa in them and it does help keep the tank clean. Also the fish graze on the leaves as they grow through the holes and over the top.

I had a similar idea some time ago as well, but was told it was a bad idea.

I have an Aqua Clear 300 power filter that I do not have cartridges for. The only thing in it is the foam insert. I thought of removing the foam, and adding chaeto to that side after I make a DIY barrier so it doesn't wash out with the water flow. It wouldn't be inside the tank, but would be hidden behind.

I still think it would work, but maybe not...

I've heard of people making fuges out of Aquaclears before.
