You hear about using kitty litter ( unscented 100% clay) in refugiums for SW all the time, but could us freshies use it also? It provides a good spot for SW plants to thrive so i am guessing it would be good for FW?

I have a bi-layer bottom of sand on the very bottom, then gravel on top. Could i throw in a layer of kitty litter to better my plants?

    Just an idea,

You would need to tear the tank down and put the kitty litter on the bottom. It will turn to mush quickly and need to be replaced in a year or so. Stay with what you have and dose your fertilizers regularly.

Could i add more sand? My sandbed is very shallow and my plants are pretty much just Planted into the gravel. Im just wondwring if their roots would do better overll if i pit more sand in.

How deep is the substrate. 2" to 3" is good for almost all plants.

Wouldn't the cat litter cause a PH flux?

Sand isn't going to help or hurt the plants, it has no nutrient capacity. As for kitty litter, like someone said it will turn to mush and also cloud the tank. I would add root tabs if you are concerned about root growth or fertilize the water. If you did redo the tank go with Eco complete or something similar
