Build My LED LLC had one of the more interesting products at MACNA this year. Their IP66 waterproof DIY LED fixtures not only are clean and good looking with extruded aluminum, but the placement and reflectors work as a system with the aquarium to take advantage of the natural TIR (total internal reflection) in an aquarium tank. Furthermore, what really was ingenious was the way you can customize your own spectrum before buying on their website. You literally drag and drop the LEDs into the fixture and then get a real-time update on specs such as lumens, CCT, CRI, PPF, color graphs and more. Very impressive.

Co-founder Nick Klase explained to me that this TIR recollection system results in no dots or disco-ball effects from the LED and I can confirm this from what I saw. The LED light was completely diffused into the whole tank. 30 - 90 degree beam angles options and 12 or 48 inch fixtures are currently available. Additional options include a hanging mount kit and a manual dimming kit.

Build My Led fixtures are available for purchase now and will start shipping October 22nd. The current fixture has arrays of 1 watt LEDs with more powerful CREE versions available later this year. Between the quality of the American-made fixture, the brilliant DIY user interface on the site and the great prices, Build My LED should become a household name.

Very cool idea. I hope they add more sizes in between 12" and 48" soon as well as more color options below 450nm. But I bet that will hopefully be added soon seeing the development of these companies and how fast they can advance their products using DIY components.
    Nice write up Matt thanks.

Just for clarification, if there is 15 led's in the 12 inch fixture will there be 60 in the 48? or what
