so this stuff keeps appearing on the sandbed of my bf's 90 reef. thought at first was cyano, but as he has a 55 sump, any cyano he does have, resides there. And as cyano tends to disappate in high flow areas (where most of this is) i doubt it is....Plus brown stringy cyano? I just dont know. Thought it may have been dino, but no air bubbles caught in it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.. attached pics below.

Looks like Cyano to me...Dino's tend to be more stringy with more bubbles.

Can you blow it away with a turkey baster? If so, cyano. I've had some show up on top of a GHA, which made "hairy cyano."

It most definitely looks like cyano to me.

Cyano is indicative of a nutrient problem. IE - you're adding excess nutrients in some manner; likely suspects are your water source (using something besides RODI, or you're past due on your RODI filter changes) or in what/how you are feeding.

All he uses is RODI, just bought new filter catridges a month ago, and as we use the same water in the other tanks i doubt that is the problem. I'm wondering though why if it is cyano, it can reside in such a high flow area. Everything i've ever read says that cyano cannot live through high flow areas. so back to my question. it's brown and looks like cyano, but????????

I had cyno on my fairway once. I used the red dirt from pitching mounds to make the cups stick better to cement.

I've had cyano on top of a rock in direct flow from a 1400 gph powerhead. Most of the time, it has difficulty staying there...this was one of those other instances. Try to suck it out with the baster, and then figure out your nutrient problem. Curious, do you dose MicroBacter7 by chance?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Or feeding Cyclop-eeze? If you have cyano in the sump it really does not seem like stretch that it would make it's way to the DT, regardless of flow.

Does not look like dino to me either. Are you using any macro algae like chaeto, for nutrient export?
