This strange flat black thing just crawled out of a hole in my live rock. It's faster than it looks - I barely had enough time to take the picture before it was gone again. Very strange...

After googling countless "black flat creature" variants, I believe it might be a "Scutus", which is a type of snail. I didn't see the white shell Scutus have, but sometimes the shell isn't visible, I read.

Am I on the right track? If so, is it generally reef safe?

A black Stomatella, perhaps? Kinda looks like a Stomatella shell on top, but hard to tell with the coloration and slightly fuzzy picture.

That's what first popped into my head. I recently had identified one in my tank, although it was tan.

I can see the shell under the mantle, but hard to say for sure which it is, Scutus or Stomatella, from the one angle. You can usually see a slit down the back of the animal that shows the white shell in Scutus snails, but I think thst's probably what it is anyway. It looks like the shell is symmetrical rather than ear-shaped. Either of them should be no problem in your tank.

    Cheers,
