Hey, I have a filter with a bio-wheel on my tank, and recently I've been reading their no good? Does anyone know about this? I think I'm hearing that they cause nitrates or phosphates?

I always said Bio Wheels are awesome for Freshwater, but I wouldn't use them on Salt soley unless I had a really light bio load. I wouldn't say they are no good.

    I'd pick a wet/dry over them though.

To answer your question, they like wet/drys don't break down nitrates, but are good at converting ammonia to nitrite.

So I'd rather have a really good skimmer than a bio-wheel as live rock and sand will help break down ammonia as it is.

I have a Pengiun Bio-Wheel with 50 lbs. of LS and 25 lbs. of LR and a protein skimmer and a refugium. Should I toss the bio-wheel or not.
