    I think most of the problems are when the pumps are allowed to suck in air as the water evaporates. Of course that'll kill any pump. Other than that there doesn't seem to be a specific time Or lifespan.

    I use a bubble mag 180s. I love it. Great size for smaller sumps.

    Just an update. My LFS got me the ATB, but it was not going to fit. I went ahead and got the BK 180 instead. They both looked amazing. I'm sure I would have been thrilled with the ATB performance as well, but I can't tell you how much of a difference I feel the skimmer upgrade has made.

    The price difference is steep; if I was more budget concious, I would not be embarassed with any of several good choices. Given that I am fortunate enough to try the BK 180, I'm super happy so far with the results.
