My ATO is a 35 gallon trashcan with a using JBJ ATO setup that pumps water to the far side of my refugium. My problem is that when I fill the trash can to the top, the first push of water will continue to pump until the water in the trashcan is same height (or a bit lower) then that of my fuge. At that time, my ATO works properly and efficiently. I get why... it begins to siphon till the water levels are equal.

My question is how do I fix this issue???

Also, I had no idea where to place this topic...if there is better location or fit.

Easiest way, have the ATO pump into the overflow of your display tank.

IMHO, you fix it with a float valve to shut off the flow when the level is where you set it at.

put a T in the tube leading to your sump so that it auto breaks any siphon above the water line of the container. This will never fail. I just used a barbed t and then put a reducer on the open part.

Problem is it is siphoning because the ATO container is higher than the sump it is dumping into, not because he is pumping below the water surface. The water is just seeking its own level. As mentioned, the easiest, and most trouble free solution is to pump it higher than the height of your ATO.

no I get that... it siphoning out. A t in the line will pump a very little bit of water back into the resivoir and when the pump stops will act as a break and suck air breaking the siphon.

Is there a float valve? Why is there a siphon if there's a pump?

    Pics?

Oh ok, I thought you meant a tee just above the sump, not in the reservoir. You are correct, this will work as well 8)

He's talking about the feed tube from the resevoir to the sump creating a unwanted siphon so that water continues to flow after the pump stops.

I have attached a simple sketch. Is this where the 'tee' should be located?
