is there a common algae cycle with newer tanks? Mine is hitting 2mo and I had a huge bloom of algae (after my tank had already cycled) and it is slowly dying off. My army of hermits and snails didn't seem to do crap.

My nitrates had gotten high and I had bought MH/T5 combo lights so I am sure that fed it. Just curious as to if there is an actual algae cycle.

the ann cycle is a never ending story. at first its drastic. depending on your feeding and the amount of livestock will depend on how much the ann cycle will be. algae feeds off of more than nitrates, it also feeds off of phosphates, silicates, and dissolved organics. a skimmer would help for most of those. an agent to minimize phosphates and silicates will also help i.e. rowaphos. but to answer your question, yes there is an algae cycle, first brown due to dinoflagettes.
