advice on feeding sun coral

I know I've seen where people suggest putting a bottle top on top of the coral and then putting in food. My sun coral is very small so I don't have a plastic bottle top...could I just put a glass in there with food? This is an embarassing question, would covering it up with no air be a problem? Just for a shorter period of time or any other options to put on top of it to feed it?

 

thats what i did. just cut a plastic bottle in half and shot mysis into the opening. started with a smal bottle and as they grew , moved up to juice bottle. i found main benefit was keeping my fish from stealing the food . such a great coral

 

I guess I should edit the original post, I didn't mean no air but no water flowing through - wondering if that would affect the oxygen level inside the glass.

 

If you're worried about air flow, you can use the bottom half of a water bottle and just cut some flow holes in it. I do that with mushroom frags when I am trying to get them attached to a rock.

It will eventually come out, especially at night. Mine was super hard to feed at first, but now its open almost all the time.

 

I started with a clear drinking glass and newly hatched brine shrimp for the really reluctant sun. Unless you leave the cup there for a long time, you probly don't need to worry about the water. They should eat within an hour though...

 

I did the same, took a plastic bottle from a drink - cut it in half poked some holes so i dont get a vacuum lifting it off and stir up sand on the coral... I put the bottle on with the screw on lid off, then shoot the food through the lid and screw it on - let em eat it all and open lid and remove bottle... the holes and lid were helpful to me cause without it created a reverse vacuum and got a lot of sand on them.

Probably my favorite coral in my tank.

great ideas! I'm going to go buy a bottle of water I really want to get this coral eating. I don't have any live brine but I have frozen mysis....how often should I attempt to feed it?

 

I've heard a lot of people recommend roughly twice a week and thats usually what I stick to. Mine picks up stuff thats floating around the tank even when I don't target feed it.

I'm sure you could feed more often than that, but I try to limit the amount of nutrients I put in my tank, so twice a week is good enough for me
