I am thinking maybe their situation is like mine. I have the Vertex Alpha 250.
It has a drain tube under the cup. Without that drain tube It would be a pain in the butt to take the cup out. I don't have a lot of room under my cabinet so I have to drain it in order to take the cup out for cleaning. Without that drain I would consider it a design flaw. It has nothing to do with being lazy. I clean my cup 1-2 times per week.
Also it is not always necessary to clean the cup even though it's full. Sometimes skimmer goes a little crazy and fill mostly with straw colored water. In that situation the cup and neck doesn't need to be cleaned. All one would need to do in that situation is drain it.
I don't have enough room under my cabinet to take my cup straight out. So I have to take two other pieces of equipment out to get the cup out. ;D
