The shell moving does sound like an octopus, the but description sounds more like a Polyclad Flatworm. Just perchance the shell was there by accident, you might want to search for polyclad flatworm images. They can be real killers in a reef tank, mostly feeding on molluscs. Here's an example:

    Picasa Web Albums - Spiffyguy

They "flow" when they move, which is similar to the movement you described.

    Cheers,

    Don

    Don,

How do you know him. Spiffy Guy (Scott) was one of my customers at Planet Reef. Also by pure chance, Scott also had a hitchhiker octopus.

The shell was in the area already...a hermit could have moved him ??? and the sand movement - shifted the shell some more...

But I really think your right about the Flat worm...

I seen just over an inch and didn't see any legs which an octopus would have... and I noticed a lot of empty clam shells in my tank mostly little...
When he was escaping the light there was a string of mucus that went with him...

    K+ Don !

    Hi Curt,

Don't really know Spiffyguy, just knew that he had some good photos of a polyclad flatworm that came out of his tank. I didn't know he had an octopus hitchhiker, though, that's an awesome find!

    Cheers,

    Don
