yesterday I lost my 60 gallon tank due to a house fire thankfully I got home in time to save my house but the tank is completely destroyed I just got the tank up and running last weekend after finally getting everything I needed for it after 8 years of accumulating everything. the fire department thinks it was from a surge protector I just bought on Saturday. really sucks I lost my tank but at least everyone is ok

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
That is absolutely terrible. Man glad no one was hurt. Go to the local reef clubs, tell them what happen, I bet they can help you out.

    Glad you are OK.
Having been a Fireman- it looks like you or someone got to the fire fast, damage is relatively minimal on the structure.
MIght I add, did you have a GFCI outlet- or at very least an adapter that is GFCI?

I'm, totally glad too that no one was hurt, and the structure (dwelling) had minimal damage-
BUT- I feel as a responsible reefer reading his post- I have to say that I think all of this could have been avoided with either the power strip (essentially and everything running to the tank)
was being run off or/thru a GFCI outlet.

    I could be wrong however.

Is there a reason why this occurred with the use of a powerbar?

Many ppl don't run their power bars from gfci and neither do stores.
Some ppl in rentals can't change their outlets. Like me.

This may help prevent further hobbyist have issues.

Would using a gfci power bar be better than a regular one?

I had just went to Lowes on Saturday and bought a surge protector strip the fire department believes that's what the cause was I had the tank up and running for a week, then added that strip on Saturday then it caught fire on sunday
