I'd say 300 watts for a 55 is good... thats almost 6 watts a gallon. Your bubble tips would be happy

I would go with the used one above, or just get a good t5 fixture for that much money.

The lights are the last things I’m going to get.
I only have the tank and stand, so for the most part I’m in the planning stage for my equipment.
I do like t5s, but I really want to have the shimmer effect.

I’m going to get these in order.
    Sand.
    Rock.
    Overflow boxes.
    Filters.
    Then lights.

I will be using a spar 20 gallon for the fuge.

This is the list of stuff I want to get.
Aquarium Light Timers: Coralife Power Center
    Aquarium Filters: Continuous Siphon Overflow
Nature's Ocean Premium Marine Substrates at PETCO

i had very similiar setup for awhile(coralife 150 watt clip ons) and it worked great for me on 120 gallon, only down side is they get hot! real hot! i've since switched to t5's but miss the shimmer so i guess the answer to your ? is yes,, that'll work just fine

Just an FYI, the watts per gallon method is way out of date with all the advances in lighting technology.
