I have been doing a little bit of research. Not quite there yet.

I'm in the "idea" part of making A 5 x 50w led hanging fixture.

The lights I'm thinking of using are not advertised as aquarium lights but here's the specs..

    High flux
Very low decay and long working lifespan
More energy efficient than incandescent and most halogen lamps
    Low voltage DC operated
    No UV
    ESD protection
    Specifications:
    50W high power LED
    Beam angle: 120-140 degree
    Forward current: 3,500mA
    Forward voltage: 15-18V
    Luminous: 3500-4000lm
LED colors: warm white or white
    Color temperature: 2700-7500K

    This is the diode

This is the heat sink that I would be using if I went with the tech look

So with five 7500k 50w LED, would I be able to replace light for acro, flower pot, ect... In a 48" long and 24" deep?!
17,500-21,000 lumens all together witch I believe is the output of one 150 hQi Mh.???? right??? Wrong????

ANYONE have ANY experience with this sort of project????
There are some Cree royal blues I would add later for depth.

50w LED is going to be a LOT of light. 24" doesn't sounds like a problem. How far across it will span, will depend on the reflector. LEDs tend to be some-what spotty unless you have a good reflector.

The reflector has been a problem. I have no idea I was thinking about using a single glass mirror as a heatsink/reflector. Unless any one has any brighter ideas that aren't too craY pricey.

They will be about 9" away from eachother. I have a middle section in my tank sucks up alot of light so it might be closer on a given side 7" maybe one side sps, the other Los n softies.

Reflector or optics for 50w led???

I want to build this to throw away my 150MH hqi and t5's
The cannon has the spectrum does any one know the needed specs???
I just hope that if I do this I can be done with the whole "I need more light"
    Phase.

Well the mirror would be drilled out, led's inset with heatsink standing ontop.
Atlases I know the glass will be well lit up. And keep the light to about a 90-100•degree light span. As for concentration and radiating the light I'm open for ideas.

Link us up on that diode and maybe we can find you some optics.

Have you seen these in person yet? 50W LED is going to be like the brights on your car. The 3W CREE LED's blind you if you look straight at em. I'm not saying these won't work, just wouldn't want you cooking anything in your tank either.

You mentioned the Cannon so is your diode the 50w Edison Opto LED?

I see what you are trying to do but I don't know how you could use a flat panel as a reflector if the diode(s) will be in a hole, on the same plane as the glass.

What about making a cone reflector out of aluminum flashing?

I have not. I haven't yet refined my options yet. I thought that some one out there has don't this already. To get their input and advice on to what diode I should buy.

In this there was one brand that I came across that optics for the bulb were for sale I will try to find them and post more specifics.

The heat should not be a problem with individual heatsinls with fan attached. At least im pretty sure I will have a temp probe to turn on when past optimal temperature more than likely car electric thermostats will run at the same current as the fans to make it easy.

These ate the only two that I have found so far.

Where are all the led experts???
