If it were me, I would buy all base rock and a couple pcs of live rock for seeding. In theory all the rock will get covered in coral eventually.

The thing is dry rock isn't that much cheaper than live rock. 50 lbs of dry rock costs $110, MarcoRocks Key Largo dry rock

For $40 more I can have all live rock.

Now if dry rock was significantly cheaper, say half the cost of live rock, it would be worth it.

that does seem to be a good deal. It's a good idea to check around like you are doing though before purchasing. It's been years ago that I ordered live rock so I'm not much help :(

However dry rock is dry, live rock is water saturated. Therefore you get much more dry rock because you aren't paying for the water weight. We actually did a test back a few years ago, I had 30lbs of rock and dried it out. Will have to dig it up and see what it came out to.

I can't find the thread, but if I remember correctly there was three of us that weighed wet LR then dried it out until it quit losing weight, and we were all around the 30-40% weight loss range. Of course the more porous the rock the more water it will hold and the greater the change in weight.
