Go with a sump. I have a 40 breeder in my room, ove tried different in tank skimmers and have modded them all. No matter what, they're loud. Not obnoxious, but when its time to sleep and everything's quiet, you're definitely going to hear it and it might bother you.

If you do the sump, check out SC Aquariums. I just got their 301 model. I was surprised at how quiet it was. Honestly I can't even hear the skimmer over my return pump and that pump is very quiet as well. The air intake silencer makes a huge difference. I've only had it running for 2 days, but it is already skimming well. Can't wait to see how well it works once it's really broken in. Simple, well built, quiet, and a great price. Definitely worth considering.
