I have a 37 gallon marineland tank that I would like to use it is 30X12 1/2X 22. This would be my very first SW tank and I'm really excited about it:)

I was planing on using the following items to get me started cycling, Please let me know if there's anything I'm missing or something I should do different

    1. 50-70 lbs of Fuji pink sand

    2. 50 lbs of dry Fuji rock from Bulk Aquarium Supplies - Reef Aquarium Supplies | BulkReefSupply.com

    3. Aqua clear 70 DIY Refugium like this one here http://www.3reef.com/forums/i-made/my-diy-aquaclear-70-refugium-guide-84100.html

4.Power-heads Korallia??? but what size and how many would i need for this size tank, I would like this tank to be a reef tank

    5. Reef octopus HOB skimmer (do i need this to set up the tank) ?

    6. lighting i will add after cycling is finished

Please help I don't want to waste any money if all possible... but I don't need everything to be top of line either

was the fuji sand dry when you bought it. if you could get a piece of live rock from a lfs just to start seeding your dry bulk rock you'd find a big difference in time needed to cycle.

I leave the skimmer off whenever i am cycling a tank, just let the tank do it's thing at first.

Yes - that would be PLENTY flow- might be too much - depends on what the HOB filter puts out - you will need a TOTAL of about 1000GPH. You might be a little overboard with two of those bad boys - especially with pink fiji sand- its very fine.

But try this: Big Al's Online - they are a 3reef sponsor and are running RIDICULOUS sales on Koralia's right now . . ..

I would get a pair of the 425 series. That will put you right over 1000GPH with the HOB filter I estimate.

You can always keep one as an alternate if you find it's too much flow -- - or put in in ANOTHER tank!!! LOL;D;D;D;D;D
