The first exciting thing about new CAD Lights Aquariums "Conic" Pipeless protein skimmers is that they are made for big tanks up to 400 gallons. The 2nd most exciting thing is all of the refinements in control. I called the 1st generation "innovative," but the 2nd generation of pipeless skimmers from Cad Lights appear to have crossed over into the "ingenious" realm for me. They actually listened to feedback about the drift in settings that could occur from pump vibration in the original pipeless PLS-100 and came up with this acrylic cathedral of gears, bushings and locks shown here. More details and specs below.

You can still freehand it by turning the skimmer body but now you can adjust in 1/16" increments by turning an adjustment knob that rotates a gear along teeth on the skimmer body. Furthermore you can lock it in place to prevent drift from vibration. Wow. These guys must dream in acrylic. I am really impressed. On top of that, the new CAD Lights Pipeless skimmers are true cones for better performance.

So I tried to find info, but do not really see any.... what problem is it trying to solve with the pipeless design?

I was thinking that, but it still sticks off the side and you would still have to have it in the sump.

Just in some ad copy it seems they say they get the water output lower to ensure no micro bubbles get out. I could see that.... does water come out all the way around or at a port?

I noted this as well. The original pipeless design did not have that gear crank - it was added on which does sacrifice some real estate for the added control.

The water comes out of two drain holes found on the same ring as the gears.
