"The case of animal cruelty was one of few cases which resulted in "successful" prosecution under section 428 of the Penal Code (Mischief by killing an animal). The maid allegedly confessed to the act and was sentenced to jail for one month and fined $7,000 for her actions. "

A month for killing an endangered species...brilliant...

That would be because other countries don't have such strict laws regarding said endangered species. Imagine what would happen if you knowingly killed these fish in the US. I think it's something like $20k and one year max penalty per offense...

Yes, and that would be 29 counts of the crime.

Just to put things in a different perspective and having spent some time in that part of the world...a full time maid probably earns the equivalent of ~$50 a month...so a $7000 fine is actually quite substantial if you figure it's equal to over 10 years worth of income.

That said, I too don't understand how people can do things like this out of pure maliciousness...I watch people like a hawk when they come to our facility to pick up orders in person...the only issue we've had to date was a little boy who was dead set on putting fireworks in all our sumps.

IMO she should just reimburse him for the value of all the fish, and do some volunteer service with animals.

I know what you mean. When a friend told me his ex-wife did the same exact thing to his 300g FOWLR predator tank killing nearly $3k worth of fish, all I could say was, what did they do to her, and did you file charges?

    Sadly, he did not...

It's really frightening to hear how much this kind of stuff happens. It gives me a lot of pause trusting people around my tanks.
