    Aqueon 26 doesn't mean 26 gallons?

For 5 years now I've had the Aqueon 26 bow front. I've always assumed that the 26 meant that it was 26 gallons. But after entering the exact measurements into a volume calculator 24.2" x 14.8" x 20.9 it actually turns out that it is 32.405 gallon.

Can anyone explain to me why then it is refereed as being a 26?

I feel like there's a measurement missing here. Depth i'm guessing?
    as I understand it:
Back of tank Length - 24.2"
    Width - 14.8"
    Max width - 20.9"
    Depth -

Correct me where i've wandered =)

You have extra volume counted in. The width is at the widest point, in other words the center where the bow is. The ends are about 12". You need to subtract the volume caused by the difference in the width from end to end. You can get a reasonable approximation by treating the two areas from the ends to the centers as triangles and subtracting the volume of the triangles from the rectangular volume you calculated.

Moxtrain the 20.9 is the depth.

The above measurements are the manufactures specs. The max width is 16" from what I've found on the web. I still don't understand how the tank can be 26 gallons with these measurements, using a TVC.

    Exactly

The mesurements you calculated are a box,not taking into consideration of the bowfront. The manufactures specs are the widest of all points of the tank overall not including the curvature of the bow.

Remember those are the largest exterior measurements. Since your tank is a bowfront it is not 14.9" wide at the ends. Try measuring the interior to get a better number. Also remember they round the numbers and by more than a gallon at times. By internal measurements and 40Breeder is almost 44 gallons.

It's due to the bowfront. The curve results in a loss of volume.
