After much begging, badgering and active campaigning my students finally convinced me to set up a tank in our classroom. So I managed to get a 14 gallon Oceanic biocube at a great price, complete with skimmer and heater. I taught my 5th graders with much patience and hopefully a little grace how to check the water parameters and how to keep a log of their work. Our tiny tank is reaching the end of it's cycle period and today they did presentations about fish they would like in the tank and took a vote! So besides being in this weird super proud glow-y state I need to make sure their choices are not crazy.

    They are:
    Catalina Goby(Lythrypnus dalli)
Orange Stripe Prawn Goby (Amblyeleotris randalli)
    Yellowstriped Cardinalfish(Ostorhinchus cyanosoma)
    Clown Goby, Citrinis(Gobiodon citrinus)

    Tile Sea Star, Orange/Red(Fromia monilis)

Any super obvious problems? I know the star will grow large, but it can be re-homed into one of my tanks.

I don't see any obvious problems with that list. I'm not familiar with a tile sea star so I can't say on that one. The tank looks great! kudos to you in using reefing as a teaching tool! it's good to be proud and glow-y :)

I can't think of one other thing in this world that would make learning fractions and percents fun :)

    It would make learning fun!

However, I am curious, how would the tank be maintained when the school is closed for holidays?

I work year round, I host summer camps at the school, over winter break we have office staff and I live just down the street and work through most of it. I unfortunately don't have summers off :(. It would be out of my care for the most a week at a time.

What a great project for the kids! So many different teaching opportunities with a tank. Hopefully you can keep this thread going so we can watch what each new class does with the tank and how they will handle issues when they arise.
